Bleaching
Dazzling smile
There is hardly anyone to challenge the fascination of white teeth. However, eating and other habits can deteriorate the color of teeth, including healthy ones. What are the hostile ‘color agents’ tainting the brilliance of the smile? In the first place, cigarettes, but also coffee (and many cups of coffee a day), tea, red wine, blueberries, cherries etc. Teeth that have undergone root canal treatment also lose their natural whiteness. This explains why bleaching is a very common cosmetic procedure. The teeth having regained their snowy whiteness add to a new self-confidence and evoke immediate approval from friends and family. A chemical substance is used for bleaching to remove stains and to lighten the color of teeth.
In our surgery we have solid experience with bleaching. That is why we use the Opalescence bleaching system, approved by the American Dental Association. Its efficiency is proven for removal of inner discoloring of teeth, such as discoloring caused by intake of medicines or resulting from the body’s ageing. It is also good for fluorosis cases (yellow teeth due to excessive intake of fluoride). Patients can see results quickly, and are motivated to go on. Teeth bleached with Opalescence, keep their new, whiter color for years. Our experience enables us to treat rare, serious cases too.
However, when teeth are severely discolored, the bleaching procedure will be longer than the standard one.
The procedures:
- In our surgery we practice office bleaching, which will take you a couple of hours with us
- Another option is home bleaching – you receive your individual bleaching kit and proceed at home. This is easy. Of course you’ll be visiting us, so that we monitor the process. If you are a bit impatient, beware: home bleaching takes about two weeks.
Discomfort, side effects:
- For people with sensitive teeth bleaching may be painful. We can avoid this discomfort however by applying special fluoride gel on your teeth before bleaching.
- Before bleaching, it is important that any existing caries is properly treated.

Face-to-face talk
Is it advisable to go on with bleaching? Find below a few basic facts on bleaching. We are also looking forward to your questions, of course.
100% white?
Bleaching procedures cannot remove all stains. Yellow teeth resulting from the intake of tetracycline in childhood cannot easily regain their whiteness.
How does bleaching take place?
The bleaching agent allows Oxygen into the dentine and enamel of teeth. In this way it whitens discolored segments.
How lasting is the impact?
If your teeth have been discolored due to excessive consumption of coffee and cigarettes, bleaching may be necessary every 2 to 3 years. Bleaching results can last longer given you keep excellent hygiene and visit your dentist regularly.
What are the side effects?
With some patients there is high sensitivity of teeth. This may mean a strong reaction when consuming cold food and drinks. This sensitivity subsides a few days after the procedure.
Can bleaching harm me?
No. Bleaching does not harm the teeth and it cannot affect their structure. Tooth enamel does not change. Opalescence has undergone 20 years of testing showing clearly that the system does not affect teeth, nor does it affect the bodily functions as a whole. In USA this bleaching system is applied to children for correction of discolored teeth for the sake of their self-confidence.
Can bleaching replace other dental procedures?
No. Bleaching is a cosmetic procedure.
Can bleaching remove tartar?
No. It is important to clean tarter before starting bleaching.
