It is widely known that brackets can be used to straighten teeth even of 60 to 70 year old individuals. Is there anything new to think of? In 20 c. a veritable revolution took place with the invention of brackets – the small keyholes stuck on tooth surfaces with the function of acting on teeth lastingly due to forces laid in a thin arch-shaped wire. The arch wire in turn works to arrange teeth along the ideal tooth arch. However, there were some problems too. Arranging crooked teeth on a narrow jaw required the extraction of healthy teeth – one, two, and in some cases even four.

Of course, hardly any orthodontist likes to extract teeth, but in the past he sometimes had no alternative given the available bracket systems. Later it became clear that in some cases worsening of the profile was seen during normal face ageing (for some types of faces) in case teeth had been extracted. Therefore some new systems make use of weak forces boosting the widening of narrow jaws. The arch wires are thinner – as thin as a hair. Deeply hidden 

Lingual brackets are attached on the inside of teeth, but still function as ordinary ones, without causing irritation or slurring. Their major advantage is that they are hidden. Sometimes however they can create problems with eating and with saliva production, while treatment with them takes longer and is more expensive.
